The 3,000 acre deer park is a wonderful place to drive or walk through at any time of the year with its vistas changing with the seasons. There are ten species of deer roaming freely in the park, looked after by the Head Verdurer. Some of the deer are unique to the park, some are rare. The Père David for example, which originated in China, was saved from extinction by Herbrand, the Eleventh Duke. In 1985, Lord Tavistock donated twenty-two deer to the Chinese Government, to be reintroduced to their native homeland and they have adapted successfully to life in the wild , some fourteen miles (33km) south of Peking. The original twenty-two have thrived to become more than 360 in number.
