Part family drama, part fairytale, The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare’s magical story of jealousy, love and redemption, is the perfect play for a summer’s evening, performed by the prestigious Globe Theatre touring company.
About the play
Convincing himself of his wife’s infidelity, Leontes, king of Sicilia, is driven into a jealous rage. Despite the entreaties of his wife and a proclamation from the Oracle of Apollo, Leontes is unmoved, and throws her into prison, where she gives birth to a daughter, Perdita, who Leontes orders to be abandoned, but who survives. The disastrous consequences of Leontes’ actions reverberate across generations and national borders. There follows heartbreak, pursuit, treachery, deceit, death and classic Shakespearean tangles as confusion reigns and false trails are laid to hide and protect the innocent. All unravels in the end as honestly, purity and loyalty triumph, in part at least.
